Things to do by Treaster's Cabin
Entertainment
The one show that you don’t want to miss while visiting is held at the
Forksville General Store on Saturday nights only. Our cabin guests simply
rave about this show/meal. Be sure to check it out, and heed my warning;
make your reservations early to avoid disappointment of missing out on all the
fun. Visit their website at www.forksvillestore.com.
Places to visit/see:
Wineries - Sullivan County now
boasts of its very own wineries. Check them out!
Covered bridges – Our county
has three remaining covered bridges located in Forksville, Hillsgrove,
and Sonestown. These bridges once were everywhere, now few
remain.
One traffic light – Our
one and only traffic light in Sullivan County is located center
town in Dushore
Country General Stores – There
are still a few country general stores in the county. Forksville,
Hillsgrove and Shunk can still boast of such a country store. Stop
in for lunch at one of them, and say “Hello”.
Antique Shops<
There are antique shops located here, and there, and everywhere in
the county and nearby neighboring counties. Probably the largest
in the area is the Olde Barn Center located near Muncy, PA. Check
out their website at: www.oldebarncentre.com
Eagles Mere – Eagles Mere has some shops
that you may enjoy visiting. Find out more by visiting their website
at www.eaglesmerevillage.com
Outdoor Activities
Loyalsock Trail – This is a 60 mile
hiking trail that mostly parallels the Loyalsock Creek. It is known for
its many vistas. Check out the website www.fallinpa.com for
more information regarding the trail.
Trout fishing - Sullivan County is fortunate
to have numerous cold water trout streams. Before season and during the
month of May, many streams are regularly stocked. Check out the PA.,
Fish Commission stocking schedule to see just when these stockings occur. The
trout fishing is great in May!
Hunting - Quite honestly, rifle deer hunting
is not what it used to be, since the deer herd has been harvested too heavily
for the past few years. But, archery hunters still can do well. The
turkey hunting, however, is great! Lots of turkeys are seen and heard
everywhere!
Bridle trail - The Bridle trail is for the horseback
riding enthusiasts. It consists of two 25 mile loops. Both begin
and end at the same trailhead. The trailhead consists of a parking area,
rest rooms, horse ties, and small shelters for your horses. Maps and
more information about this trail can be found at www.dcnr.state.pa.us.
Canoeing/kayaking/tubing – Although
the Loyalsock is not suitable for canoeing, kayaking and tubing can be done
at certain times of the year when the water level is conducive. Canoeing
can be done at Hunter’s Lake, near Eagles Mere, or at Lake Jean. The
Susquehanna River runs through neighboring counties, where you can also rent
a canoe.
Biking – Hundreds of miles of dirt roads
run through the mountains of Sullivan County. This makes for a wonderful
biking adventure for the family, since traffic is very minimal.Mountain
biking can be done on some of the trails before mentioned, too.
Cross country skiing/snowmobiling – When
there is snow in the winter, there are numerous trails and roads open for cross
country skiing and snowmobiling.
Other Places to Visit
Loyalsock Creek- It’s known
for great trout fishing and its wonderful scenic views. At
World’s End Park, the swimming area is actually a large hole
in the creek where you swim with the fish, not a pool like other
parks.
Haystacks - These are unusual rock
formations at the eastern terminus of the Loyalsock Trail. They
are shaped, of course, like haystacks.
Loyalsock Canyon Vista – This
is the vista that overlooks World’s End State Park and the
Loyalsock Creek gorge. It is one of my own personal favorite
places, and it is the view you see at the top of this website.
High Knob Overlook – Another
vista located near World’s End, where you can view the mountain
tops of seven counties. There is a picnic area located here.
Worlds End State Park – A
780 acre state park located on Rt. 154 near Forksville. It
offers swimming and picnic areas along the Loyalsock Creek. The
Loyalsock Trail also runs through this park.
Ricketts Glen State Park – This
is a 13,050 acre park located on the other side of the county. The
park contains 24 named waterfalls. The highest falls is 94
feet. This is an especially enjoyable hike.
Pennsylvania Grand Canyon – Even
though it is a drive, some of our guests take a day trip to the
Pennsylvania Grand Canyon near Wellsboro. Here they offer
horseback riding and horse drawn wagon trips through the canyon. I
think they offer rafting, too. It’s a fun day!
Festivals and Events
Fall Festivals – Sullivan
County has two fall festivals held in October, when the fall foliage
is normally at its peak. The Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce
can provide more information on these events.
Sleigh Rally – In February,
an antique sleigh rally is held in Forksville, weather permitting. Check
out the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce website for more information.
Dog Sled Races – A winter
fest held at Camp Brule has dog sled races and other winter competitive
events, such as, snowshoe races, tubing, etc.
Forksville Folk Festival– Forksville
does hold a Folk festival. Check out the web for the date.
Bowhunter’s Festival - Each
year in September the bow hunters’ festival is held in Forksville
at the fairgrounds. This event has many archery competitions
and is known for its running deer target.
Eastern Delaware Nations Indian Pow-Wow -
If you have a Native American Indian heritage or just have an interest
in what happens at an Indian pow-wow; be sure to stop by Forksville
and see the happenings during this event.
